What is the Day of Convocation?

  • The Day of Convocation is a day dedicated to welcome and introduce new students (freshmen and transfers) to the UNC Charlotte academic community.
  • The day starts with students assembling in their college designated location for the Dean’s Welcome.
  • Check your college morning meeting location here. 
  • Then, students will walk as a group to the Dale Halton Arena to participate in the New Student Convocation ceremony.  
  • The ceremony will be followed by departmental and collegiate activities.

When is the Day of Convocation?

  • The Day of Convocation is held on the first day of the fall semester: Monday, August 21.

Is attendance mandatory?

  • All new undergraduate students, freshmen and transfers, are required to attend.

What is the New Student Convocation?

  • The New Student Convocation is an assembly of faculty, staff and students to officially welcome and induct new undergraduate students (freshmen and transfers) into the UNC Charlotte community of learners
  • During the ceremony, students will learn about UNC Charlotte’s history, mission, values, and academic expectations.
  • Just as graduation marks the completion of a course of study, Convocation marks the beginning of the new students’ academic journey at UNC Charlotte
  • The New Student Convocation ceremony takes place on the first day of the fall semester, Monday, August 21, at 11:00 am in the Dale Halton Arena.  
  • Doors will open at 10:30 am.

Is there a dress code for New Student Convocation?

  • Students should dress casually, wear comfortable shoes and wear the UNC Charlotte T-shirt given out at 49er New Year (held prior to the ceremony)
  • Free convocation t-shirts may also be picked up at the UCAE office in Colvard 2300 on Monday morning (while supplies last).
  • If you don't get a convocation t-shirt, wear any UNC Charlotte/Green apparel of your choice.

What do I need to bring to New Student Convocation?

  • Bring yourself, your cell phone (if you have one), and a winning attitude! 

Where can I find a Day of Convocation schedule of activities?

  • College specific activities will be listed on this page by August 1. The schedules will also be included in the Niner DestiNation app available for Android and iPhone

When do classes start?

  • Classes scheduled between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm will not meet on Monday, August 21. Classes regularly scheduled for 5:00 pm or later will meet as scheduled.

Are there activities for continuing students?

  • The Day of Convocation is for new freshman and new transfer students only.
  • Some continuing students will be involved in hosting and helping with the day of activities.
  • Classes scheduled between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm will not meet on Monday, August 21.
  • Classes regularly scheduled for 5:00 pm or later will meet as scheduled.
